Cocaine Treatment Programs

In the 1970’s and 1980’s cocaine use was at an all-time high in the United States.   Men and women of all ages and socio-economic groups were using powder cocaine and the highly addictive “rock” form of the drug known as crack cocaine.   Today, the number of users has shrunk, but those with a cocaine addiction must still find drug treatment or face the devastating consequences of their dependence.

Different Types of Cocaine Treatment Programs

Those who seek treatment for their cocaine addiction have a choice in terms of program.  There are residential cocaine treatment programs for those individuals who need a place (away from the stress and temptation found in their home environment) where they focus solely on their recovery.   Conversely, outpatient drug addiction treatment allows individuals to return home each day after counseling is complete to be near their support structure (i.e. family and friends).

What goes on During Cocaine Treatment?

The majority of cocaine treatment programs are made up of three core elements:  detox, counseling and after.   Detox is the process by which an individual cleanses their system of drug toxins.   When complete, the individual will have, theoretically overcome their physical addiction to cocaine.  But because cocaine addiction is seen as more of a psychological addiction, detox is not as difficult as with other drugs such as heroin, Vicodin or other opiates.

Once cocaine detox is complete, the individual moves on to counseling.  Individual, group and family counseling are all ways for the individual to explore the root causes behind their cocaine addiction and learn how to make better decisions in the future.   Given that cocaine is used by many to enhance work performance, or as a “social drug”, these new life-skills are going to be crucial to the continued sobriety of the individual once they re-enter their daily lives.

Speaking of day-to-day life, once an individual has completed cocaine addiction treatment, they may still encounter daily challenges that present a threat to their sobriety.   To help cope with these challenges, aftercare programs such as Narcotics Anonymous, follow-up counseling and sober living all provide a place for the individual to gain much needed support and structure.
